Joseph, you are amazing. Thank you for sharing this personal article that is so impactful. I had to read it twice to soak it all in. I have dear friends that I think of as I read this as I also think of you and your family. And it is so relatable personally. You’re very wise and I appreciate your words.
You referenced the Bible verse that I’ve struggled with particularly “grace is sufficient” I think the word “sufficient” is the irritating part. I try to give God the benefit of my doubt, because I really know his grace is Amazing! As a Christian, I love to sing/think of the song “Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” it reminds me I am safe with Jesus in charge and I trust Him. He always knows what is right and best for us.
Ellen, thanks so much for those kind comments! I'm very much in process with these things, but I'm glad they're helpful.
Yes, "my grace is sufficient" can be a really hard pill to swallow. The truths tied up in the idea of lament are comforting to me, because "trust" can coexist with pain, questions, fear, and anger, and often comes on the far side of those things. CS Lewis says somewhere that faith is choosing to keep believing what we've previously decided is true, even when circumstances or temptations might lean us away from it.
Allison and I talked about 1 Peter 5:6-7 this morning - Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Peter says that to Christians being persecuted, which is an amazing thing to think about.
